Zarnesti Gorge Dawn Chorus

Zarnesti, Romania
Notes:

This is my second recording from Zărnești, uploaded to Earth FM.

This is a really special location – a Romanian national park that is just teeming with wildlife. Although anthropogenic noise is present in small traces there, it is entirely possible to break away from its shackles, with some effort.

This particular recording was made in a very narrow gorge, with towering cliff walls either side of the track. Trees grew in great densities just above, and within the gorge itself, smaller trees still clung on to even the shallowest of soils. I left an overnight recorder at this location, and in the still morning air, several tawny owls echoed their last evocative calls before napping for the day. They overlapped with back redstarts, robins and blackbirds – some of the first to wake and sing each morning due to their large eye size. There is a clear reverberation in the dawn chorus as the sounds bounce off the rocks that envelope the birds.
