The Spectacular Sounds of the Red-billed Chough
The magnificent acrobatic flights of the red-billed chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax)paired with their distinctive calls in this forested canyon are, to us humans, a display of spectacular beauty.
Being part of the Corvidae family, their red bill and legs allows us to spot them easily. They are seen in pairs – as I was lucky enough to see one overlooking the area from the cliff top – or in groups.
The most predominant sound in this recording is the flight call: a sharp, strong with a very short descent.
In this acoustic environment, so much gets enhanced and it’s likely to work in tandem with this species’ behaviour. Their calls and sounds reveal this overwhelmingly beautiful landscape. We can also hear the European green woodpecker (Picus viridis) and the more predominant passerine in the background is the European greenfinch (Chloris chloris).
