The Forest Awakens – Taman Negara
On one of my treks in the Taman Negara National Park in peninsular Malaysia I came across a recently abandoned Orang Asli settlement.
Some of the lean-to shelters were still intact and I decided to try to record the sounds of the forest waking up the following morning.
I set up the mics in one of the shelters and strung up my hammock nearby to monitor the recording.
This recording starts at 7:00 AM, about 15 minutes before first light and captures the early morning forest coming alive to a new day.
This was recorded in 1993 during which time the Orang Asli of the Batek tribe still freely roamed many regions of this forest.
Currently some members of the tribe have abandoned their nomadic lifestyle and have made a permanent settlement near the park entrance where they live off the proceeds of tourism.
