Smooth Ocean Roar, Green Contours, Nocturnal Animals
Unlocked waters, changeable carved ebbs and flows on a narrow strip of sand, awake lies the Atlantic Ocean, warm by its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea and to the north-African coast.
If we walk backwards to the inland, the sand starts to stir with mud, in the Ria Formosa, the most important wetland of Portugal, with saltmarshes and halophytes. It’s the habitat of several hundreds of crabs, and a vital area for migratory aquatic birds. Cacti, bushes, and rocks stand as a limiting area for those who walk. Inside this seemingly-secluded garden, from where the recording took place, many other birds are seen and heard through out the day and by nights, in September, the Tawny Owls mark their presence with their calls, concealed in the pine trees.
To hear the ocean roar like this at night – without pauses, regardless of the wind speeds and emphasized by the surrounding nocturnal quietness – serves as reminder of its strength and of deep time.
Recorded in September 2025 during the eco-accoustics Endless Fields Residency at Yucca Studios.
