Early Winter Dusk at Ngarkat
The first evening twilight of winter in Ngarkat Conservation Park. As night falls over the vast mallee heathland, the day’s gusty winds very gradually subside, while a solitary cricket sings persistently, with occasional brief and curious modulations of its song. In the distance, now and then, a few birds, particularly White-eared Honeyeaters, call out as they settle down for the night. After a while, the wind subsides completely, like thoughts fading and falling silent; and it becomes very calm and still in the mallee heathland. But the cricket continues, faithfully chanting its untiring mantra into the widening stillness and darkness…
Recorded with respectful awareness that this region was, is, and always will be, the home country of the indigenous Ngargad (Ngarket) people.
