Delicate Rain in a Cloud Forest in Guatemala

Rain sound is not an easy subject to record. Most microphones are not made to withstand high humidity for prolonged periods of time. Leaving them out for days on end to capture the natural sound of rain is usually problematic. I’ve had many microphones stop working altogether after a few hours of recording rain.

Over the years I have developed certain techniques to deal with these issues. It has taken a lot of experimentation but I can finally record hours and hours of rain sounds without having to sacrifice my equipment. On my recent trip to Guatemala I had more than 10 sound recording rigs working continuously in the field.

While it didn’t rain for the entire duration while I was there, I managed to experience many hours of calm rain sounds. The best part is that anthropogenic noise was very limited, so most of these recordings are pristine, perfect for listening. Enjoy!
