This recording was made from the balcony of our cottage in the middle of the rainforest in Sepilok, Sandakan.
Lush ferns and palm oil plantations separated us from the forest floor. The rough sided frog and cricket frog had been chirping and clucking all afternoon since our arrival. Water hen can be heard in the background. As the sun fell lower in the sky, the birds returned home and the empress cicadas began buzzing. It was the first time I returned to a tropical forest in 4 years. I felt at ease. A warm wash filled up my entire being.
