Middle Andaman Jungle
Baratang Island
Baratang Island, nestled within India’s Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, boasts lush tropical forests, mangrove creeks, and captivating limestone caves. Historically, it has been inhabited by indigenous tribes, notably the Jarawa community. However, the island’s dynamics have shifted over time with the arrival of mainland Indian settlers, making the indigenous peoples to retreat deeper into the jungle. While access to the island is made by a main road traversing the jungle connecting South and North, the situation remains delicate due to the cultural significance and rights of the indigenous inhabitants. Any contact or approach is strictly prohibited and guarded by the Indian military. Despite these complexities, it is possible to visit the island to experience its natural wonders in limits. It was pretty surreal siting quietly in the jungle capturing the rich sounds of this place knowing that on the other side of sea channel, there are ancient tribes still existing and living their life in the forest.
